Should You Use A Misspelled Word As A Domain Name?

July 22nd, 2008 | Posted in blog marketing

Hey, this word would be perfect as my next domain name !

There are some Important issues to consider before jumping on the misspelled domain name bandwagon. Probably not a good idea to go ballistic registering hundreds of misspellings before doing some research first. Here is a list of a few concepts to consider :

1) If the word is rarely used, there will be an extremely low chance of someone actually attempting to spell that particular word in first place.

2) While surfing the internet, keep a small notebook handy and write down words that you come against that appear in other blogs or websites that are misspelled.

3) if you are trying to brand your website with your domain name, probably it is not a great idea to use a misspelled word as the domain. The professional image of your webiste may become compromised.

4) If your goal is to use the domain name just with affiliate sites, then go for it. Traffic is traffic. You may get some traffic without promoting heavily your domain name.

5) Once you have found a misspelling that seems adequate in your eyes, use a service that will check the possible dollar value of the domain. One that I like to use is estibot . Just type your proposed domain name into this site and it will provide you with a quick online appraisal. Their system will tell you how many times the keyword appears in google, if there are any backlinks present, and other keyword metrics. If the site was previously registered, backlinks may already be present. If there are a lot of them, bingo, the value of the domain name may be quite high. However, you have to take these appraisals with a grain a salt, a domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Free Money Maker : Thanks for the comment. Determining which domain names will sell well is a tough call, but interesting. Best to put lots of effort into trying to value them beforehand.

kyrious : Certainly keep the concept in the back of your mind. The same misspelled words sometimes appear thousands of times in different blogs and websites in general. Thanks for commenting.

Having a mispelled domain name has the good and bad. Good thing about it is that you might get a traffic from people who are good in mispelling but people might not remember your site easily. It depends.

Thanks for commenting Hye Munar. It could be tricky to get the same people to visit again. Hopefully something interesting on the site will cause they to bookmark it.

It is right in some case. But the thing is that the misspelled domain might be associated with something OK! for example you know my blog- Progrecious.com this is not a correct spelling – but if you might notice there are many popular sites that people are used to use. For example – Delicious. But this time progrecious must be associated with Progress. And of-course it has its own advantages and disadvantages. Nice Post -must be really helpful for beginners. ;)

I see your point. A play on words or combinations of familiar words can make a domain name memorable. Thanks for the comment Luke.
