Should You Let A Domain Name Expire ?

July 26th, 2008 | Posted in Goals, blog networking, contests, setting up multiple blogs

I will never expire, I will continue to exist forever !

I think that it would be neat to make a post now about what I will do in a year’s time with my extra domain names. With those domain names , I will check the total income that was generated over the course of a year for each one. If a domain name’s income does not cover another registration fee for a year, then bye bye domain name into the big pot of expired domains.

The likelihood of having to let these domains expire will be slim. At least that it what I am assuming. They will all have had aged over the next year and the aging of a domain name that has some content is a good thing.

As websites age, they become more and more appealing to search engines. The engines, I guess, feel that they are not going to disappear anytime soon and their page ranks are good. It is the same principle as with other things in life. We go to our elders for advice because they have been around the block, are wiser and dependable ( in most cases ). Or if you have heard about a certain store for years, you may enter and buy junk that you don’t even need just because it seems familiar and comfortable to you.

Something else that I just learned is that the length of time that a domain name has been registered affects its importance to search engines. If you register your domain for 10 years, it is valued higher by the search engines. I had no idea that that factor mattered. So, if you are serious about making money online for long term, register that particular domain name for a long period of time.

It seems to take about 3 months for a site to even get a ranking. It is set up in this fashion, to weed out sites the pop in and croak quickly. Just another way of weeding out search engine junk appearing when you are searching for something. I have read on another blog, can’t remember the name of it, that 99 percent of blogs do not last more than 3 months. Try to be one of those 1 percent of bloggers and you will be glad that you had persevered.
