Developing A Small Website Experiment Using Wordpress

August 2nd, 2008 | Posted in experiments

Why is it I also appear on the small websites ?

This will be my first experiment. The results may take a few months to come in, but it should prove to be quite interesting. If this experiment is successful, it will provide me with a good template or system to use to develop lots of smaller websites.

I had mentioned previously that I plan on setting up multiple blogs. I have already set-up a few static pages. Now I am going to take it a step further.

I noticed on past sales reports, there are tiny websites that do require zero or low maintenance. These sites seem to generate a tiny part of income. It may only be around $3 a month. That works out to around $36 per year. To receive $36 a year, the daily average would be 10 cents a day. Of course, this is assuming that you do not spend to advertise. To cover domain name registration for one year of $10, the daily income would have to be 3 cents a day. Twenty-six dollar profit for a small website that can basically left alone to age is nice. If you manage to develop another 50 in the same fashion, multiple streams of income will total to $1300 per year. Now we are talking !

This experiment is to develop one of my domain names using a simple version of wordpress. The revised template will two or three columns. One sitebar will have just the titles for the articles, the other one a few ads. I will write ten articles of around 500 words filled with good content. I will ensure that I use a free keyword tracker online to include great keywords and phrases that will be loved by the search engines.

Then I will submit 5 different unique articles to sites that accept articles. Now comes the easy part; I hope. Remember this is just an experiment, it probably is going against a lot of normal methods. What I plan on doing is to just let the site sit. I will not touch it for a few months. However, I will place some simple ads on the site. Will it work ? If it does or doesn’t, I will let you know.

Right now, most of my registered domains are parked. Parking for peanuts is what it is amounting to presently. Most of the sites have zero backlinks because they have never been registered in the past.

For these mini-sites, it is important to select narrow niches. Narrow niches have a lot less competition. Too narrow is not good. For instance, ‘toothpastes that whiten teeth’ is probably too vague. However, the niche ‘ whiten teeth’ has a lot more search terms. The major search phrases are :

  • how to whiten teeth
  • ways to whiten teeth
  • natural ways to whiten teeth
  • does baking soda whiten teeth

Now your niche could be ‘natural ways to whiten teeth’. It should not be hard to write ten detailed articles using this niche. Pick a domain name that will match or explain your niche. Perhaps naturallywhitenteeth may be free to register. I haven’t checked myself.

What do you think about my approach ? How you tried out a similar method ? If so, I would really like to know how it went for you.

shawal : Very true statement. It is always best to try the different methods out yourself. The results will not match exactly the results of others.

BloggerContests : I haven’t tried blogger. Nevertheless, no matter which format you use, having your own domain name sets you apart.

Dollar dude : Thanks for the comment Dollar Dude. I will make sure that I post the results.
